A Snapshot into the Life of Meagan Mederos, Photographer C/O 2018 Written by: Ambar Garcia & Ayehisa Rivas 12/12/16
Original work by Meagan Mederos, 2016
At only sixteen years old, Meagan Mederos travelled to Nashville to start her journey in the art of travel photography, finding and documenting everything from beautiful landscapes to interesting people. She was inspired to invest in this hobby by her grandfather, who took pictures for Quinceaneras, weddings, and other events. But in no time, Meagan decided she wanted to further her skills into a life-long career.
In taking a Journalism class in sixth grade, Meagan expanded her love for the art, and was helped immensely by her mentor Ms. Torres, who helped with the media--the editing--aspect of photography.
Here in the Gardens, Mrs. Fernandez, who teaches collegiate-level photography classes, continued to build on the talent that Meagan had fostered in middle school, from teaching her how to find the most intriguing angles in a photo-shoot to mastering Photoshop.
Currently, Meagan loves to take pictures of the environments and societies around her, as well as self-portraits. For her, photography used to be something she only did in school for her Journalism class, but she found passion in it over time and now takes pictures nonstop for fun. Meagan believes that all art should send a message and impact the viewer, so she tries to incorporate feelings of unity through her art. Recently, she has become the Head Photographer of the worship band at her church. The fact that Meagan has a photography class and mentors has moved her to develop skills she never thought she would have. She is able to learn from people who have experience in the field and are more than willing to give guidance and second-opinions. This year, Meagan Mederos entered the National YoungArts Foundation photography contest, with the possibility to win $10,000 and classes taught by professional photographers such as Bruce Weber and Carrie Mae Weems.
